How To Care For Your Muslin Ring Sling

So, you’ve just unwrapped your new Melliapis ring sling—hooray! Whether you’re brand new to babywearing or adding another sling to your collection, that soft muslin is ready to become your go-to parenting tool. But before you pop baby in for your first snuggly carry, there are a few important steps to take to prepare and care for your sling properly.

Here’s everything you need to know to get started—and to keep your sling looking and feeling lovely for the long haul.

First Use

Before using your ring sling for the first time, give it a little prep to ensure it’s soft, secure, and ready to support your little one comfortably.

  • Wash it – Always wash your sling before first use. This helps fluff up the fibres and makes the muslin grippier and softer. Pop a clean sock over each ring to stop them damaging your washing machine (or your sling).
  • Thread it – Thread the tail through both rings, then back over the top ring and under the second. This is what locks the fabric in place for a safe and snug carry.
  • Walk it – Use your fingers to ‘walk’ the fabric between the rings, smoothing and aligning it section by section. This helps it glide easily when tightening.
  • Prep it – Make a little pouch for your baby to sit in. Looping the sling around your elbow gives a rough guide to the right size.
  • Bunch it – Gather the fabric into a soft rope and sit your baby on it. Their legs should straddle the fabric, with the sling sitting in the backs of their knees.
  • Pull it – Gently pull the fabric up over baby’s back—only as high as needed. For newborns, up to the nape of the neck; for older babies, to the armpits.
  • Tighten it – Tighten in a sunbeam pattern: top, middle, bottom. Adjust one section at a time to get a secure and comfortable fit.
  • Check it – Always check baby’s position. Their airway should be clear, their chin off their chest, and they should be close enough to kiss. Make sure the seat is deep and supportive, with no risk of slipping or slumping.

✨ Pro Tip: Practice with a teddy or doll before your first carry with baby—it helps build confidence!

Daily Care Tips

Once your sling is part of your daily rhythm, a few simple habits can help keep it in great shape.

🧼 Spot Cleaning is Your Friend

Babies are adorable—but also a bit messy. From milk dribbles to teething drool, you’ll likely get the odd mark here and there. No stress! Most little spills can be tackled with a damp cloth and some gentle detergent. Spot cleaning saves you from overwashing and keeps the muslin feeling its best.

🧦 Sock the Rings

If you do need to machine wash your sling, pop a sock over each ring. It protects your washing machine and prevents the rings from pulling or snagging the fabric. A simple but seriously effective trick!

🚫 Skip the Softener

Fabric softener might seem like a good idea, but it can actually coat the fibres and make your sling less breathable and less grippy—which isn’t what you want when carrying a wriggly baby. Stick to a baby-safe, gentle detergent and air dry your sling naturally for the softest, safest results.

🧺 Use a Laundry Bag (Optional but Handy)

If you have a mesh laundry bag for delicates, it’s a great place to pop your sling during a machine wash. It keeps the fabric protected and avoids tangling with other items—especially helpful if you’re washing it alongside baby clothes.

🎒 Tidy Storage = Longer Life

When storing or travelling with your sling, make sure the rings are secured and the tail isn’t trailing. A neat, folded sling won’t get caught or snagged, and it’ll be easier to grab and go next time you need it.
